  50. This section lists the entries Norton AntiVirus adds to AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, WIN.INI, and SYSTEM.INI by default.

  52. The following is added to AUTOEXEC.BAT:

  75. ***** INSTALLING ON COMPUTERS WITH MENUING SYSTEMS OR MULTI-BOOT CONFIGURATIONS *****
  76. By default, Norton AntiVirus adds the following line to AUTOEXEC.BAT:

  80. Norton AntiVirus also adds the following lines to CONFIG.SYS:

  82.  DEVICE=C:\NAV\CLOAKING.EXE

  85. If, when you start up your computer, it displays a menuing system or a menu
  86. from which you can select from more than one operating system, in most
  87. cases Norton AntiVirus adds the above lines as the last in your startup
  88. files. If Norton AntiVirus doesn't load, move the location of these lines
  89. earlier in the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files.
  90.  
  91. ***** WARM BOOT TRAP *****
  92. TSRs, device drivers, or programs that trap warm boots (Ctrl+Alt+Del) may
  93. override Automatic Protection's ability to check for boot viruses on floppy
  94. disks.  Likewise, programs that perform a warm boot without Ctrl+Alt+Del
  95. will bypass the automatic check for boot viruses.
  96.  
  97. ***** "AUTOPROTECT SELF-TEST FAILED" ERROR *****
  98. Although this error occurs in Windows, it is almost always caused by
  99. insufficient free conventional memory.  You need at least 475K of
  100. conventional memory available before starting Windows.  To check the amount
  101. of conventional memory available, type "MEM /C" at a DOS prompt before
  102. starting Windows.  The value reported for "largest executable program size"
  103. must be greater than 475K.
  104.  
  105. ***** FILES STATEMENT IN CONFIG.SYS *****
  106. Norton AntiVirus requires that FILES be set to at least 25 in your
  107. CONFIG.SYS file.  
  108.  
  109. ***** EXCLUSIONS *****
  110. Norton AntiVirus scans for files with .XL?, .DOC, and .DOT extensions.
  111. However, these extensions are excluded from unknown virus scanning and
  112. inoculation detection because they are subject to frequent changes.
  113.  
  114. ***** SCANNING ZIP ARCHIVES *****
  115. The following limitations exist when scanning ZIP archives:
  116.  
  117.  * Password protected files in a ZIP archive (stored with the
  118.    PKZIP -s option) are not scanned.
  119.  
  120.  * Norton AntiVirus for DOS cannot scan ZIP archives with more than
  121.    about 1,000 files; the exact number of files depends on the
  122.    amount of available memory.
  123.  
  124. ***** AUTOMATIC PROTECTION AND MEMORY OPTIMIZATION *****
  125. The automatic protection TSR does not require memory optimization to use
  126. UMBs efficiently.  If you are planning to optimize memory, we recommend
  127. doing so before installing Norton AntiVirus.  If Norton AntiVirus is
  128. already installed, remove automatic protection from CONFIG.SYS or
  129. AUTOEXEC.BAT and reboot before running the optimization program.
  130. Once the memory optimization is complete, add the command to load
  131. automatic protection back to the appropriate file and reboot.
  132.  
  133. ***** SCANNING IN BATCH MODE / UNATTENDED SCANNING *****
  134. If you want to run Norton AntiVirus unattended so that it doesn't
  135. pause when alert boxes appear, use the following procedure:
  136.  
  137. To customize Norton AntiVirus to run in batch mode:
  138. 1) Select one of the following options from the "When a Virus is Found"
  139.    drop-down list box in the Options - Scanner Settings dialog box:
  140.    "Notify Only," "Repair Automatically," or "Delete Automatically."
  141. 2) Check the "Immediate Notify" check box in the Scanner Advanced
  142.    Settings dialog box.
  143. 3) Check the "Remove Alert Dialog After" check box in the Options -
  144.    Alerts Settings dialog box, then enter 1 in the "Seconds" text
  145.    box.
  146.  
  147. NOTE: For more information on these options, see "Customizing Virus 
  148. Checking" in the User's Guide.  For information on using command-line
  149. switches, see the  "Using Command-Line Switches" appendix in the User's
  150. Guide.

  152. ***** TECHNOTE.TXT *****
  153. This text file contains information about viruses that cause unique 
  154. problems and require special handling.  
  155.  
  156. ***** REMOVING NORTON ANTIVIRUS AS A NETSCAPE HELPER APPLICATION *****
  157. To remove Norton AntiVirus as a Netscape helper application, run Netscape
  158. and select Options and then General Preferences from the menu bar.  Click
  159. on the Helpers tab.  For each File Type where NAVW is the Action, either
  160. click the Browse button to select another application to be the helper
  161. application or select the radial button "Unknown: Prompt User" to be
  162. prompted for an action when downloading a file of this type.
  163.  
  164. ***** PERFORMANCE ISSUES UNDER NOVELL CLIENT32 ON A NETWORK *****
  165. If you are experiencing extreme performance degredation while using the 
  166. Windows TSR over a network while using Novell's Client32 software make 
  167. the following change to your WIN.INI file:
  168.  
  169. [NAV16]
  170. OpenShared=0
  171.  
  172. ***** RESTORING WITH DOS RESCUE *****
  173. When you restore with the DOS Rescue program, it may warn you that the 
  174. info probably wasn't saved on this computer. This is due to a memory 
  175. manager being present at the time you created the disks. You may 
  176. ignore this warning.
  177.  
  178. ***** INCREASING PERFORMANCE WITH ADDITONAL SYSTEM RAM *****
  179. The minimum RAM requirement for Norton AntiVirus version 4.0 is 4
  180. megabytes. We recommend that you have at least 8 megabytes for faster,
  181. smoother performance.
  182.  
  183. ***** INSTALLING NORTON ANTIVIRUS 4.0 TO AN EXISTING 3.0 INSTALLATION *****
  184. We recommend installing Norton AntiVirus to the same directory as your 3.0
  185. installation. This will facilitate the reuse of your existing startup file
  186. directives.
  187.

  192. ***** MICROSOFT WINDOWS *****
  193. If you are prompted to inoculate a file while windows is loading and
  194. your computer subsequently "hangs," type the following command at
  195. the DOS prompt to inoculate the windows files:
  196.  
  197.      C:\NAV\NAV /REFRESH C:\WINDOWS /S
  198.  
  199. If Norton AntiVirus is not installed in C:\NAV or Windows is not
  200. installed in C:\WINDOWS, substitute the appropriate path.
  201.  
  202. After inoculating the windows files you can then load Windows.
  203.  
  204. ***** WINDOWS SCREEN SAVER AND SCHEDULER *****
  205. If your screen saver is not activating with Scheduler loaded,
  206. select "Hide When Iconized" from the Scheduler Options menu.  If
  207. you don't want to hide the Scheduler icon, add the following
  208. statement to the [Scheduler] section in the SCHEDULE.INI
  209. file:
  210.         ICONTIME=0
  211.  
  212. The SCHEDULE.INI file is located in your Windows directory.
  213.  
  214. ***** AUTOMATIC PROTECTION AND UPDATING SOFTWARE *****
  215. If you have configured Norton AntiVirus to detect unknown viruses using 
  216. the Virus Sensor Technology feature, you may get unknown virus alerts when
  217. installing or updating software.  This does not necessarily mean the file
  218. is infected with an unknown virus.  The installation process may be 
  219. overwriting existing files or expanding compressed files, which may 
  220. trigger an alert.
  221.  
  222. ***** AUTOMATIC PROTECTION AND COMPRESSED DRIVES *****
  223. If you install Norton AntiVirus on a compressed drive and subsequently get
  224. the error message "NAVOPTS.DAT file not found, default settings loaded,"
  225. install automatic protection as a TSR.  For instructions, see "Using
  226. Automatic Protection as a TSR" in the User's Guide.
  227.  
  228. ***** BYPASS KEYS WITH MEMORY MANAGERS *****
  229. By default, pressing both ALT keys will bypass the loading of the 
  230. Auto-Protect feature of Norton AntiVirus.  The memory managers, QEMM and
  231. 386MAX, also use both ALT keys to bypass their loading.  If you are using
  232. either of these memory managers, you may wish to modify the bypass keys 
  233. used by Norton AntiVirus.  For instructions, see your User's Guide.
  234.  
  235. ***** ACT! FOR WINDOWS 3.X *****
  236. If you are using ACT! for Windows 3.x that includes WIN32s, you will need
  237. to add the following entry to WIN.INI:
  238. [NAV16]
  239. ExcludeFirst=1
  240.  
  241. ***** CLOAKING DRIVERS *****
  242. Norton AntiVirus does not check for additional cloaking drivers.  
  243.  
  244. ***** NORTON ADMINISTRATOR FOR NETWORKS *****
  245. If you are using the License Metering feature of Norton Administrator for
  246. Networks, turn off the "Use UNC Path Names" option in the License Metering
  247. Configuration screen.  This ensures maximum compatibility with Norton
  248. AntiVirus.
  249.  
  250. ***** INSTALLING FROM AN OS/2 DOS BOX *****
  251. Norton AntiVirus will not install properly from within an OS/2 DOS box.
  252. To properly install in an OS/2 DOS box, run "INSTALL /NOMTC" for
  253. "No Multitasking Check".  This will bypass the Norton AntiVirus attempt
  254. to check for a multitasking environment.
  255.  
  256. ***** INSTALLING WITH AFTER DARK VERSION 3 ***** 
  257. If you experience problems with the Windows TSR in conjunction with the 
  258. After Dark 3 screen saver, you may turn off the startup memory scanning 
  259. in the Windows TSR to avoid any problems. You may scan memory prior to 
  260. starting Windows with the DOS TSR and the use of the alternative options 
  261. switch (/OPTS). Please see your documentation for more details on the use 
  262. of this command line parameter.
  263.  
  264. ***** RUNNING THE DOS SCANNER WHEN BOOTING WITHOUT STARTUP FILES *****
  265. The DOS scanner on certain 386 and early 486 machines may have problems
  266. running when you boot up without a CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT file. You 
  267. can eliminate these problems by booting up with DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS in the 
  268. CONFIG.SYS or by typing in "SET DOS16M=0" (without the quotes) at the DOS 
  269. prompt prior to running the DOS scanner.
  270.  
  271. ***** SYSTEMS WITH DISK MANAGER SOFTWARE *****
  272. On a system that needs disk manager software to access large hard drives,
  273. you must use a bootable disk made with the disk manager software before 
  274. running the RESCUE.EXE program.  If you need to run the RESCUE.EXE program 
  275. to restore your hard drive, first boot from the disk made with the disk 
  276. manager software, then put in the Norton Rescue Boot disk made from the 
  277. DOS or Windows Rescue program and run RESCUE.EXE.  Do not boot directory 
  278. to the Norton Rescue Boot Disk in this case to restore your system or you 
  279. could cause damage to your system files.
  280.  
  281. ***** NETX LOADING HIGH *****
  282. Under certain circumstances, if the NETX network driver is loaded high 
  283. after the TSR is loaded, the network alerting in the DOS TSR may not work 
  284. correctly. If you experience this problem, you can type in NAVTSR /NR+ 
  285. to reinstate the network alerting.
  286.  
  287. ***** QUARTERDECK'S QUICKBOOT FEATURE *****
  288. Please note that Quickboot bypasses the system memory scanning and this 
  289. causes the warm boot floppy scanning to be skipped.
